Noble kava cultivars
Which cultivar should you try?
Six noble cultivars dominate US kava retail — four from Vanuatu (Borogu, Melomelo, Boroguru) and two classical Hawaiian (Mahakea, Hiwa, Moi). Each has a distinct chemotype, a different effect profile, and a different traditional context. Pick by mood, not by brand name.
Borogu
462531Pentecost Island, Vanuatu
Balanced, slightly uplifting, calm-but-alert. Often described as the "talkative" kava. Onset ~15 min, plateau 45–90 min, duration 2–3 hours.
Best for · First-time noble kava drinkers, social situations, replacing alcohol at bars.
Melomelo
245631Malekula / Pentecost, Vanuatu
Strongly relaxing, body-forward sedation with minor cognitive softening. Onset ~20 min, peak 45–75 min, duration 3–4 hours.
Best for · Sleep support, muscle relaxation, high-anxiety evenings.
Boroguru
462135Pentecost / Ambae, Vanuatu
Uplifting and clear, with a slightly longer plateau than Borogu. Less body-heavy than Melomelo.
Best for · Regular drinkers looking to rotate off Borogu, daytime users, anyone who finds Melomelo too heavy.
Mahakea
256431Hawaii (Puna, Kona)
Warmer, heavier, and longer than typical Vanuatu kava. Pronounced relaxation and sleepiness at 4+ shells.
Best for · Connoisseurs, people who want to taste the difference between growing regions, deep-relaxation sessions.
Hiwa
265431Hawaii
Deeply relaxing, spiritually resonant character reported by traditional drinkers. Strong body load; onset can take 25–30 min.
Best for · Experienced drinkers, ceremonial or reflective use, users seeking a deeper calm.
Moi
246531Hawaii (moi = "king")
Strong and heavy. Onset 20–30 min, plateau 60–90 min, duration 4+ hours at traditional amounts. Reliably sedating.
Best for · Experienced connoisseurs, ceremonial practice, deep recovery nights.
